Making a Difference
Sat Nav Seabirds
Donations to Neptune have helped our coastal staff on the Farne Islands monitor the migratory habits of their sea birds by fitting them with tiny geo-locators. The computer-generated maps they produce show that over winter the seabirds had visited everywhere from Aviemore to Penzance, with trips to France and Spain too!
Newtown Estuary
Situated on the North West coast of the Isle of Wight, the creeks of Newtown Estuary remain beautifully unspoilt. When the harbour came up for sale in 1965, a group of naturalists, yachtsmen and others raised the purchase price and gave it to the National Trust. During the last fifteen years, Neptune Supporters have helped us acquire three important areas surrounding the harbour, to fill in and preserve more of the jigsaw.
Woolacombe Beach Rangers
Research shows children are spending 60% less time in nature than their parents did at the same age. This is a big concern if childhood memories are the inspiration behind people’s trips to the coast. That’s why we organised free family activities on Willacombe beach during the 2010 summer holidays. From rockpool rambles to beach sports, we made sure families had a great holiday experience and learnt how the National Trust look after these special places.
Colourful Coast project
We’re opening up a 10km stretch of the largely unexplored coastal route between Whitehaven and St Bees in West Cumbria, by installing a breathtaking coastal path. Walkers can now explore this delightful stretch of Heritage Coast. The project is a great example of how supporters’ money and the power of partnerships can make a real difference, bringing together a wide range of organisations to create this special path.
